My take on this aspect of the table top gaming experience. Not an expert just one person trying to do what he can & trying to demonstrate that anyone can do it.

KIKO, son of Kong

Last item in February to get finished off is Kiko, using the Crooked Dice gorilla. I seem to have gone ape crazy lately, and have been monkeying around with my many simian figures, most notably the larger gorilla figure of an earlier post. Since most of my gorillas are likely to be painted in a more typical colour scheme I thought I would do this one up as an albino ape, just like Kong's son was in the movie.

I started by giving him a watered down pinkish red wash over a white base coat, that due to a lack of planning had to cover up black primer.

Then various shades of white were used, maybe 6 different versions of white starting with ivory and a cream colour. I am not so certain that all these shades show up in the final version.

I tried to be careful with the pink under wash as I wanted some of it to show through, but not too much to be distracting. In the pictures of snowflake [captive albino gorilla] you can often see that his pinkish skin was visible through his fine white fur. His fur often appears very white, so I gradually increased the amount of bright white paint that I used, but the result is that, at least in the pictures, there is not enough contrast in his fur.

His exposed flesh was a challenge, as I avoided pink, trying to make his skin very light with traditional light flesh colours. In the end after a few layers, I gave up and just used a P3 pink paint, with a reddish flesh wash. I am not certain if I like the striations across his chest but, again, looking at the pictures of Snowflake, his chest was not smooth, but had wrinkles. Also the models pose is not of an ape thrusting out his chest, and thereby stretching his skin taut, but rather hunched over a bit, so for now it stays this way.
