Pulp Alley urban boards

 

 Finally I have gotten around to addressing my woefully inadequate urban/tarmac gaming surface. Good old Dave of Pulp Alley keeps talking about 18" x 18" tiles as a good gaming surface. Well, while he seems to be able to walk into a home store in the US and readily find these tiles it seems to be a bit more of a challenge here in Canada. Even if you can find them they are sold by the case which is not so economical to me. However I did find some tiles on Amazon and then figured out a way to make them double sided, sort of like what Dave does.

The 'great' mountain build of 2022 part 1

 Being a chronicle of the building of 

two quarter mountain boards

 and 

two lowland boards.

For no good reason I have decided to build an arctic(?) mountain board comprising of  four 2' by 2' styrofoam boards two of which will each have a 1/4 part of a mountain. Each mountain will be vaguely triangular, about 18" by 18" by 25". They will rise to a height of about 16-18 inches. Beyond that there is no real plan of attack. I know I want to incorporate some Woodland Scenics rock faces in the build and I want some climbable terrain be it paths or protruding rocks or both. But how they will wind up looking will be anyone's guess.

The final result will first be posted on the Analogue painting challenge site. I suspect this will likely be the last thing I do for this years challenge which will end on March 20th. While Tuesday is my normal posting day we the challenge has shifted to a post something any day mode, so while I ideally will have this done by this Tuesday, if it does not happen I will still have a few days left to get it done before the challenge ends.

 

I may wind up painting some more stuff for this Tuesday just to hedge my bets should this not get done in time. 

 

 

 

 

Planet of the Apes game board, it got bigger!

 

 2' x 2' just seemed to tight, so I added on an extra 5 square feet taking the board to 3' by 3'. Tougher to store, but better to play on. Mos items work out to be scatter terrain so I can store this thing in the garage while the bits and bobs can be stored in a box inside.

The fencing is easily removed/added as each section has long pins that easily slide into styrofoam. I am going to fix up the domed building making the dome more central.

But first, before the mountain...

 

For this Tuesday, a post apocalypse city ruin for apes and humans to explore. A simple 2' x 2' board, so far. Maybe add a another foot to two sides to bring it up to a 3' square. Of course three more squares would give a nics big gaming ares...

We all go a little mad sometimes...

This is more than a little mad, I am not so much teetering on the brink, but racing on the down slope towards insanity. I have started to build a 4 panel arctic mountain game table, four 2' x 2' boards. Two will have a large hill/mountain on them, one will be a shoreline and the last one will be rough ground with a bit of a rise on two edges. They will be interchangeable to some extent, not 100% but enough to offer some variety. The elevated area will be 18" long leaving a scant 6" edge, or a 12" valley if the orientation of the boards is altered.

My typical spreading out of all items of potential use, and a bit of a mock up, sketch out of plans. The four L shaped bits are from a previously abandoned project, they are more or less straight edges and the original plan was to use them to facilitate the lining up of the corners. Plans changed.

I now have decided that the boards do not to be fully interchangeable, so I do not have to match up all four boards. The two mountain squares will still be able to match up with each other just not with any other boards that I might make. The other two boards will be able to switch places and that will give me enough variety.

However as I started working on the big boards a bad idea entered my head. I have now decided to make the mountains hollow to allow for some set up inside.

So the WIP shows my very rough assembly. I had drawn up a basic plan, but with the decision to make the mountain hollow out went those plane to be replaced with nothing but hit and miss almost random placing of items. Oh I have laid out some items that might fit inside and I am trying to leave my options open for what could go in, but I am flying by the seat of my pants for this.

The madness part of all this is not the building of it but the fact that I want to get this built and painted this week in time for Tuesdays posting. Not only that but I am at the same time working on a butte for Mars, a Planet of the Apes board [2' x 2'] and 50 figures for PoTA, 50+ arctic figures and another 50 figures for Mars. Not all can be done this week. At very least Mars will have to wait. I should be painting my arctic figures but instead I have almost finished off 28 apes.

Final pic for today. You can see that I have also cut out panels so that one can reach inside without removing the top and one can also have something extend under both mountain areas.

Hello all

One of our club members mentioned an interest in playing Dystopian Wars. This suggestion prompted me to pull out some boards that I had built a few years ago. So instead of working on my current Pulp Alley project, I have become distracted by yet another project. On the other hand I have been looking for something to use in a video...
