My take on this aspect of the table top gaming experience. Not an expert just one person trying to do what he can & trying to demonstrate that anyone can do it.

Spray varnish issue!

So, after finally picking up a paint brush again, I decided to work on these fine VSF naval troops. Once finished with the painting it was on to the Army Painter anti shine spray varnish, just as I do with everything that I paint. This is the result of my matt varnish spraying! I have never had this problem before, sure sometimes it does not seem to get as dull as I would like, but never has it amped up the shine like this. Now the usual issues that are talked about on the net do not seem to apply. I sprayed indoors, in low humidity, and did not overdo how much I sprayed. The can was well shaken, and relatively new and yet this was the result. I waited a while and tried some more even lighter passes with the anti shine thinking perhaps I had lingered too long the first time. No joy!

So off I went to the store in search of another product in the hopes that it would magically fix the problem. First off I visited Hobby House and picked up a 100 ml can of Revell and a 400ml can of Vallejo spray varnish. I then stopped at Deserres and picked up a 200ml can of Pebeo and a 400ml can of Krylon varnish. Then I set up a test of each.

After one pass I was able to see an improvement by all four sprays, but the best results came from Pebeo. (second one in) The above picture shows figures in pairs, the left has only been sprayed with the Army Painter while the others have had a single coat of the respective spray.

The pictures may not do them justice, but they all did come down in shine. In the end I selected the Pebeo to apply to all the figures. The end result can be seen below.

A significant improvement!

So all four did a reasonable job at fixing the problem, but to me Pableo stood out.

Next up will be testing them when they are not being used to fix a problem.

Pableo 200ml     $6.97/10.99 (was on sale)

Vallejo 400ml    $16.99

Revell 100ml     $11.00

Krylon 400ml    $13.99

I would have also tested out a Winsor and Newton spray, but there was none in stock. (I have heard good things about it)

  1. What about Dullcote? I have always found it the most reliable, and Hobby House still has spray cans of it. I also found using a hairdryer on the minis immediately before and after they are sprayed helps eliminate shininess (likely eliminates humidity). I have had this problem with some varnishes (but Army Painter Anti-Shine is usually pretty good) sounds like you got a bad can with not enough talc. Another option is Ultra Matt Polyurethane Varnish in a bottle by Vallejo ( 72.653) used in your airbrush. Airbrush application tends to be more reliable than spray can application in terms of no shine.
